The Electronics & Communications course at the Menzies Institute of Technology aims to provide knowledge and skills for basic discrete electronic components such as resistors, capacitors and inductors eventually moving up to semiconductor devices like diodes, silicon controlled rectifiers (SCR’s), bipolar junction transistors (BJT’s), field effect transistors (FET’s), operational amplifiers (OP AMP’s) and digital logic gates. The student will also be introduced to common circuits that employ these devices such as oscillators, amplifiers, flip-flops, multivibrators, shift registers, counters, frequency dividers, and microprocessor circuits. This course will essentially give students the skills to understand and diagnose practically any electronic device.
In terms of the National Broadband Network (NBN) Project, this course covers the theory and application of fibre optics as a means of data transmission including fibre optic cabling, connectors, splices and tools, power budgets, fibre optic design, installation and testing, and broadband applications.
In the midst of the automation of most industries, this course also introduces the basic principles of Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC’s) used to control various industrial processes through the use of electrical, electronic, hydraulic and pneumatic devices.
